Chapter Thirteen (Brett)

“So far, everyone still looks good. The ones that did take have really flourished. Of course, part of that is from being grain-fed this whole time. They’ve been fat and happy.”

“After what happened with Jackson’s ponies, I didn’t want to take any chances.”

Damien sighed. “I know just how you feel. I still can’t believe we got in a bag of spoiled sweet-feed. That’s damn bad luck.”

“I’m still not so sure that it was bad luck,” I muttered.

“Come on, we’ve been over this. Tim was here the whole time. Hell, you’ve seen the video footage of him turning in for the night!”

“It still doesn’t explain how we ended up with fifty pounds of fermented feed. Those geldings of Jackson’s damn near died. Not to mention the blow to our reputation.”

Damien cringed. I knew just how he felt. I’d spent the last three weeks avoiding calls from my father and fellow ranchers alike. Between them and the constant distance that Penny had put between us, I was always on edge anymore. After our kiss by the stream, it seemed like everything had gone downhill. Three geldings placed in my care for training, getting colic was only the tip of the iceberg.

“Not much we can do about that. It will bounce back. I’ve noticed the numbers sure are down this quarter, though. We only sent out seventy percent of the straws.”

I cringed. “That’s a good bit of loss. Haven’t heard numbers that low since we first started.”

“Well, I figured you’d see it that way. That’s why I went ahead and did a second round of AI on the mares that didn’t take earlier in the spring. It will make for some long nights this fall but may be well worth it.”

“Hell, I’ll take the risk of a few extra colts for the farm over a loss any day. Penny won’t be happy about it,” I said.

“Getting a bit ahead of yourself, aren’t you? Penny won’t be around come fall. She told me last night she’s got a couple girls for you to meet. Hell, I’ll be surprised if she makes it to the end of the summer.”

My heart sank, anger boiling to the surface. “What are you talking about? She hasn’t told me about any replacements.”

“I’m sure she’s just waiting for the right time. You know she doesn’t want to be a nanny forever.”

There was nothing I could say to him that wouldn’t make me sound like a jealous boyfriend. I was angry at Penny for talking to him and not me about finding a replacement. Catherine was my daughter, after all. The decision of who should look after CeeCee was mine and mine alone. I’d find someone to take over for Penny when I was good and ready. It sure as hell wasn’t going to be some random woman who answered an ad in the paper.

“Looks like you two are gonna get a chance to talk about it right now,” Damien muttered.

The house's front door opened, and Penny emerged, Catherine, teetering behind her as she stopped to inspect different things every few feet.
